The Cabin Bed, the essential for the child's bedroom

Much more than just a bed, a must-have in your child's bedroom

It's certain that you couldn't have missed the children's trend in terms of bedding: the cabin bed . After combination beds, bunk beds... Cabin beds have been the talk of the town for a few years now.

A little flashback, Maria Montessori said: "the child has the right to sleep when he is sleepy, to wake up when he has finished sleeping and to get up when he wants". By this, we must understand that the child must be able to get into bed and get up alone, and of course without risk.

This is how the floor bed began to be talked about, as a bed that promotes learning and the development of the child's autonomy ; unlike cots with bars, perceived as a constraint for the growing child.

Each room has its own cabin bed

The cabin bed: when and how to get started?

Choosing a cabin bed instead of a cot can be scary for parents of a toddler. You certainly want to develop your baby's autonomy (you've read Montessori!) but you're a little lost with all the variations that exist now and you're wondering when you can or should move from a cot with bars that is so secure to a completely open cabin bed. Before you start searching, define your criteria :
  • A cabin bed for my baby now or my child from 3 years old? This will define the dimensions of the bed you will choose. For a baby, choose a bed with a maximum length of 120 cm (like a cot) so that it is adapted to his size. Then, you can "recycle" the cabin bed into a reading corner. For a child, you will have to move to a length of at least 160 cm so that he can keep it longer. The "big bed" is often a bed that we will keep until the child is 10 years old
  • A cabin bed on the floor or a cabin bed with feet (raised)? It is recommended to put the bed on the floor so that the child can get in and out of it independently from a very young age. But don't panic if you find that this solution is unhygienic because the mattress does not "breathe": if the height between the floor and the top of the mattress does not exceed 20 cm, you can place a small mattress or a few cushions around the bed to prevent falls. If your cabin bed is on the floor and without a bed base, you can consider adding a bed base that will allow you to air the mattress a little.
  • A cabin bed with or without bars? Funny question, you might say? Indeed, but it is not out of the question to add bars (at a height that is not excessive either) for toddlers, on one side only (the bed being attached to a wall) to prevent restless babies from getting out too often. This does not prevent baby from getting out by himself on all fours from the top or bottom of the bed.
  • Finally, should you buy it or make it yourself? That will depend on your manual skills and/or your wallet ;)
