The Cabane bed, a must for any child's bedroom

More than just a bed, a must-have for your child's bedroom

There's no doubt about it, you couldn't miss the latest trend in children's bedding: the cabin bed. After combination beds, bunk beds...cabin beds have been the talk of the town for a few years now.

Maria Montessori used to say: "The child has the right to sleep when he is sleepy, to wake up when he has finished sleeping and to get up when he wants to". By this we mean that the child should be able to get in and out of bed on his own, and of course without risk.

This is how the floor bed began to make a name for itself, as a bed that encourages learning and the development of a child's autonomy; unlike cots with bars, which are perceived as a constraint for a growing child.

The cabin bed: when and how to get started?

Opting for a cabin bed rather than a crib with bars can be frightening for parents with a toddler. You certainly want to develop your baby's autonomy (you've read Montessori!), but you're a little lost with all the variations that now exist, and you're wondering when you can or should switch from such a secure bed with bars to a completely open cabin bed. Before you start looking, define your criteria:

  • A cabin bed for my baby now or my child aged 3 and over? This will determine the dimensions of the bed you choose. For a baby, choose a bed with a maximum length of 120 cm (like a bar bed) to suit his or her size. You can then "recycle" the cabin bed into a reading corner. For a child, you'll need to go up to a length of at least 160 cm, so that he or she can keep it longer. The "big bed" is often a bed that will be kept until the child is 10 years old.

  • A floor-mounted cot or a raised cot? We recommend putting the bed on the floor, so that your child can get in and out of it independently from an early age. But don't panic if you find this solution unhygienic because the mattress doesn't "breathe": if the height between the floor and the top of the mattress doesn't exceed 20 cm, you can place a small mattress or a few cushions around the bed to prevent falls. If your cabin bed is on the floor and doesn't have a box spring, you might consider adding a box spring to allow the mattress to breathe.

  • A cabin bed with or without bars? What kind of question is that? Yes, but it's not out of the question to add bars (not too high either) for toddlers, on one side only (the bed being stuck to a wall) to prevent restless babies from getting out too often. This doesn't prevent baby from crawling out of the bed on his own, either at the top or bottom.

  • Finally, should you buy it or make it yourself? That will depend on your manual skills and/or your wallet ;)
